The In Motion Animation Festival at Peacock Visual Arts in Aberdeen currently features a collection of work by the award-winning artist, animator and music director, Thomas Hicks.
On display is a large assortment of Hicks’ weird and wonderful illustrations, paper mâché masks and scrapbooks, offering the viewer a fascinating insight into his artistic thought process.
Taking inspiration from “weird objects” and his personal “fascination with the functionality of mechanical, man-made pieces”, the quirky and idiosyncratic element to Hicks’ work shines through.
What made the exhibition particularly appealing was the continuous streaming of the artist’s filmography at the far end of the gallery space, ranging from music videos to animated theatre productions of ‘Orpheus and Eurydice’ and ‘The Brothers Karamazov’.
As soon as I left the exhibition, I had DNTL’s Rock My Boat in my head for days.
